David Bowie was Saying Good-Bye Beforehand

David Bowie died at the age of 69 this Sunday. He had cancer.

Brian Eno, a long-time collaborator, communicated with Bowie in a week before his passing away.

He assures that David’s death was a surprise to him. Eno feels an enormous gap now.

The two men knew each other for more than 40 years. During the last few years Bowie lived in NY and Eno lived in London, so they communicated with the help of e-mail. They signed off with invented names. Bowie signed himself as milton keynes, mr showbiz, the duke of ear and rhoda borrocks.

A week ago Brian received a letter from David. It was as usually funny and surreal. Bowie used games of words and allusions. Bowie thanked Brian for their good times and signed as “Dawn”. Only now Eno realized that his friend was saying good-bye in such a way.

Bowie has released his 25th album, Blackstar, only two days before his death. The songs in the album feature death and rebirth. The album came out on his 69th birthday. There was a launch party in Berlin on this occasion.
